What is a SIM card?

Why should you pay much more on your calls when travelling abroad? Why should you pay on the roaming (transit charged by foreign carriers when talking on their net) when you can talk to any destination at low rates thanks to GSM and SIM technology.

What is “roaming”?

Roaming is the actual transfer of connectivity done by your mobile phone when shifting from one wireless telecom provider to another. This happens when changing geographic loaction thus causing the roam of the mobile from one provider to the other. When roaming extra charges adds to your bill, and the “air time” talked while using the host provider services, and will be charged later. The price is set according to the agreement between these.

How it works?

So what should I do in order to decrease my phone expences and avoid the roaming charges? One of the less known methods is by switching the Local SIM card in our mobile phone with a foreign one. This will eliminate all the extra charges generated by the roaming process, will allow the user to make and receive calls at local rates.

What is a GSM Network?

SM (Global System for Mobiles) is a cellular network, which means that mobile phones connect to it by searching for cells in the immediate vicinity. GSM networks operate in four different frequency ranges and today the service is used by 2 billion people across 212 countries. It bases itself on radio wireless technology and its considered a fairly secured system.

What does SIM Lock mean?

The SIM Lock is the method used to limit the mobile phone to one SIM card. Mobile providers that deals with accessories will sell cellular phones togheter with their SIMs. When locking the mobile phone they prevent their customers from switching one SIM with another, thus using the mobile phone with other operators services.
